  1. Usually there are many reasons. Budget, availability, DOP is used to .... and so on. Take your pick. We as colorist have to work with material we get and have to make it as good as possible (taste and artistic goals are totally different topic also).
  2. I guess camera dedicated looks are somewhat dated concept now with ACES and digital era. You want good starting point and build your look on top of it. Sure some cameras have more "character" in them but with multiple cameras on same timeline you mostly want them to mach. If not then it is simple you just use it as is. I have not seen red used for looks, maybe Helium will change that. Ok i have heard "alexa look" but we know it is the crap idea from mis informed people give you on ungraded flat images which is not a look. I have had that few times. "Lets not loose Alexa look" Maybe you had something different in mind?
  3. There is some ways yes. One would be to go with ACES and work in there (the main idea is to get all the material sort of similar in starting point). Second way is to do manual transform depending on your tool. Now the question is if you tool of choice will work for your task.
  4. I have VFX guy here to test the workflow out of Resolve and it includes a lot of ACES2605-1 and ACES2605-0 and so on. Generally if you all are on the same page or know each others workflow in detail it should be fine. CG version is there for a reason as some cgi apps and 3d generate anomalies without it with infinite colors.
  5. I would take some example, look at scopes and play with it a bit. Would that make sense? This is how i build looks after reference.
  6. Those videos cover it. What i do differently is that i set input transform on files not the project based as then i can have mixed material timelines. Did it help you or is there any questions ?
  7. I try describe a bit later how i did it.
  8. I could but then i would take "credit" from others and their tutorials. What would you like to know?
  9. It is that beautiful time of the year when leaves fall and weather is still reasonably nice to drive about. Why not do it with iconic mini car which has just gone electric. Just drive around and meet friends, enjoy nice weather and have fun. I graded promotional film of Microlino for my Switzerland clients. Check it out.
  10. You should be able to re create the look from the stills i bet? On what platform do you work?

    DCP software

I use Final DCP and it is super simple just price is not super cheap.
  12. Editing abilities geting better help colorist also if you need to alter "final final really locked" edit. I get it every feature i work on. Now it is easier than ever to make changes last minute without long round tripping.
  13. Lets assume they make all the functions work properly and just different departments use different option from there would that be ok then ?
  14. Ok but by this any platform with good group tools should be fine?
  15. I think BM plans to cover the whole workflow. See Fusion for example, cams and all of that. Integration to workflow is important bit now and in the future. This is why Nuke studio seems strong platform to me. I think we have one editor around here that has Avid but i'm not sure which version. National TV has Avid for editing but everything that comes out of there seems bad in quality sense. Not sure why. This is what makes it not so popular in my book for now. Maybe by time i know better.
  16. Anyone can compare Supermicro and HP Z840?
  17. I bet BM takes the knowledge and outs it in Fusion and Resolve to run realtime.
  18. Then again we can not also assume that Avid user base is going to explode any time soon. Mostly old studios or edit bays have it and new comers use the tools that fit their need more?
  19. You probably should have had it in subject that you are doing small indy project. At the moment it is a bit mis leading imo.
  20. Not opening up to Aja makes a lot of sense specially with free Resolve. I feel now that i tend to edit less and less in Premiere and more in resolve as i can work colors the moment i edit and raw editing is better supported. Super super flexible in workflow and edit for me. Personally to me Avid seems evil as i do not have to use it i keep away from it usually. So one's perspective can be totally different was my point.
  21. Old trailer but i like the colors. Seems filmic and organic.
