  1. I have totally ned ideas for now and plan to go with 10 core i7 instead as single core clock speeds are faster that some of my apps need. Also Faster RAM and os on M.2 SSD should make a difference. Somehow it is hard to buy Titan Pascal around here but i plan to have two of them on X99-E-10G WS. Time will tell how that goes. If later needed i can go with proper RAID and ton of drives in the same case Alex is using.
  2. With a lot of gpus in some point you only not run out of slots but also cpu data lanes. See your cpu specs and see if that works out. Sometimes people miss that and this is where dual Xeon comes in.
  3. On editing: I have done now many of my editing jobs only in Resolve and left Premiere out of it on purpose. Specially material shot on Alexa on BM cameras i can edit already in ACES workflow and work quickly also on shots with color. Makes so much sense these days, if in future it will get more snappy and more shortcuts like Marc pointed out i do not see myself working with other tools.
  4. I was thinking of dual 27" also but not decided yet. Price difference is marginal some 300 dual 27 (3840 x 2160) vs 38" 21:9 (3840 x 1600). In resolution with dual gives larger desktop for sure. I really feel that i need more space on regular workspace (color page) as i tend to do a lot of masking and i need more room for that. As i do other things as well like sound mixing and Fusion large screen has it's benefits. Will rethink this single 27 for now. Thanks! BTW. It is cool to see you here!
  5. I have my scopes on separate screen as well as i use scopebox and not internal scopes. As i'm "jack of all trades" i do other stuff to and i feel that more screen with better resolution would help a lot. Even in resolve when doing masks and such i feel that i need more and more room compared to my current 24" single display. Some users say that curvature is brilliant. There would be to put scopes on top of the main monitor but then i would have to look up more.
  6. I wonder if anyone has used subject for gui on Resolve? I know it is a bit ridiculous for resolve but i have other things also in mind like Fusion for that station and lare display would be good there just not sure how well Resolve would handle it. Native resolution is 3840 x 1600. Two issues i would see is curved panel and rather large dimensions and one has to think where to put video monitor and scopes. Any ideas i wold be grateful. http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-38UC99-W-ultrawide-monitor

    Xeon vs i7

I have considered now i7 10 cored (extreme) model as it should be ok for now. I'm pretty sure it will leave my mac pro in dust in comparison. So only not the core speed but data lane speed to ram is also a thing to think of and thus the ram speed is also important bit to a degree. On Titan to 1080 it seems that some users get better results with NR and this is a thing that matters to me as well. For the media i think of LSI i16 raid now till i get any other or better information on raid's

    Xeon vs i7

For now i'm aiming for this one: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/X99-E-10G-WS/overview/ Few main things that are different from xeon boards: M.2 ssd now with 2 TB capacity of new Samsung 960 Pro drives 3500 MB sec read and 2100 MB sec write. That is one snappy os drive. Dual 10gig lan card as internal device i can use to connect to my mac pro for project sharing and save pci slot. Possibly a bit faster ram (3333 mhz) I'm not sure about it scientifically but seems to me on ida level it should make out one snappy grading machine for overall work as i described before and some moderate (4k) grading jobs. Dual new titans should be enough for now. There is not any indication i would grade 8k stuff any time soon. That is my reasoning. With big box like this i should be able to fit in also LTO7 in future for archiving purposes. When i'm home sleeping it is good time to put some stuff to tapes or external drives depending on a project budget and data amount need storing. Maybe i'm off on my ideas and do not see all the details but for now it seems reasonable for me as if i get to linux in 2 years or so then the current linux setup stuff is old already. I consider usable modern computer life to be 2 years tops. It can work sure for 6 but it is not nearly cutting edge any more then.

    Xeon vs i7

I postpone my xeon ideas for now as some users report they choke under some operations in win os. I have had similar experience with clients win machines where 36 cored xeon was beaten by average i7 in Resolve. That made me thinking again if not going to Linux now then it seems better to hold my xeon ideas for now. Specially with things like AE and such that need faster single core operations that is a problem when core speed drops down to 2,5 ghz. Seems to me that i7 can be pushed to 4 ghz and thus get more speed out of single core. In a way this is a complex problem to have machine with multiple usages and still be optimal for everything you do.

I have some sort of plan set already now. In first "wave" i plan to build base system and later add big array etc. so i can do my vfx stuff better and do occasional Resolve renders for 4k and such. Reading and gathering information on raid's now to decide which model to use. I will probably go with the big box shared in another thread. http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/pc-d8000/ Those are cheap and fit about anything i need now or in the future.

Running win is more like running custom built motorcycle as you constantly have to tune them I will go now with i7 and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip.

I have talked some users and their experience is that Titan is better when a lot of NR is done. As i have occasional fashion jobs then it is important to have a lot of control of the images and many times we need to NR a lot.

Not sure. I have not liked it so deeply. Titan X is on my plan the new one with pascal. Regular machine can handle at least 2 of them without expander or such.

What you mean by this ?

    Xeon vs i7

Maybe later date. I'm leaning strongly now towards i7 as it seems xeons will throttle in some occasions to 2,5 ghz only, my friend tested with setup i'm thinking of and it choked like a ton. I have felt similar thing with clients 36 cored xeon (win machine also) Why i started to think of that is 2 gpus will be good for me now and 10c i7 can be very solid performer ad OC 4ghz with stable results and with regular cooling. As i use also other apps and not only resolve then having less but much faster cores makes sense for now. I plan to use 3333 speed ram and M.2 ssd for os and that should give me insane os response on paper.
  17. So did this post work out for you i wonder?

imo Xseon is like free breathing engine in a car and i7 is like tuned Subaru with turbos and nitro. Just to compare in car world parallel.
  19. How about trimming red material? Do you just copy or do you trim also ? In Resolve i feel that it does not work with RED these days very good with red files trimming.
  20. I just did this lingerie xmas spot where the model was not as smooth as you see it in final results. Could i have gone in more detail sure but would needed more powerful machine also as 4k delivery is asked in the end. From shot to shot you can gather the actual skin under the correction and probably feel what was going on. Will not share originals here. Key trick was parallel nodes with masking + heavy blur with heavy feather and some grain on top of it to kill plastic feeling. Could id be done in more detail? Sure but we had time and budget that limited it a bit.
  21. Thanks guys. What i saw with this project was that i totally missed some relieving features of the lingerie as i was really focused on the visual details but some of my colorist friends picked them up and pointed out.
  22. It is time to feel beautiful before xmas. I just finished another version of Beldona fashion spot / short. It is hard work and someone has to do it like soma say. It was shot on RED Epic some time in August in Switzerland. Graded it in Resolve 12.5 with some Neat Video and some glow etc. I clearly need better machine for jobs like this. Model has some digital makeup also done in Resolve. With more beefy machine it would be better to go on detail for that but i hope in this case it is sufficient.
  23. Those trainings depend what you already know or do not. Some find them helpful but some say privately that not so much. Tom has excellent point here getting connected directly. I would take it. Hands down better investment than 10 trainings.
  24. "No you got that wrong, bigger speakers make sound better" But i agree with you totally. I have seen some god stuff done even on AE so it is not as much what you use but what comes out of it. Experience is also great help here.
