Color theory resources

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Still finding my feet in the grading world.

I'm finding there's a lot of resources out there on the mechanics and how-to of color grading (mainly here on Lowepost), but I'm looking at learning more around the theoretical side of it. Like why choose a more desaturated look vs a saturated look, why go for a more orange/teal look, or why color X makes an audience feel X emotion, etc etc. There's obviously thousands of examples.

I feel like the 'why' should come before the 'how' on a grading job, and that's the part I'm wanting to learn more about.

Any tips, videos or resources out there to share, to delve deeper in this?

Hey Bruce!

I like "If It's Purple, Someone's Gonna Die".   That book goes through the whole spectre of colour and how it's used in film.

Other than that I'm reading Filmlight's new colour book right now, but that is a bit more heavy on the technical side.
