Free Kodak 50D on 2383 LUT for Rec.709, built from Kodak's published data (and what a LUT can't do)

Recommended Posts

I've been building a film look from Kodak's own published data for Vision3 50D and the 2383 print stock, rather than matching it by eye, and I'm sharing the 50D look free for Rec.709 footage.

A few notes from building it, in case they're useful to anyone doing the same:

LUT size and interpolation matter. In one of my test builds (250D on 2383, from LogC3) the 65-point LUT came out at 0.39 delta E (95th percentile) against the source with Tetrahedral interpolation; the 33-point version was 0.83. So use the bigger LUT and set Resolve's 3D LUT interpolation to Tetrahedral (Project Settings, Color Management).

A LUT can't carry grain, halation or gate weave: anything that depends on neighbouring pixels or on time isn't a colour transform. Add those after the LUT.

Some of what reads as "film" (how much the colour layers bleed into each other, how soft the print is) is a range, not a fact. I picked mine by eye on my own footage, then checked greys stay neutral and skin stays where it should.

On an iPhone, film in Rec.709 with HDR off for this one, or it won't sit right.

Happy to answer questions about the process. Feedback very welcome, good or bad.free_sample_ba_01_KohSamui20.thumb.jpg.f9ff11ee5beab79592d1bffc0a2cc56b.jpg
